Damascus, SANA- Damascene oriental leather industry is an ancient and prestigious craft in which the Syrian craftsmen are excelled by developing it to make their products keeping pace with the modern life.
“Leather industry is an industrial and handicraft heritage that combines between art and originality, and it is a traditional Syrian handicraft in which the animals’ tinned leathers with different kinds and sizes are used for many purposes such as making shoes, belts and bags, Bassam Saidawi, a craftsman in the oriental leather manufacturing told SANA.
He added that leather industry is a primitive craft and its is still a handcraft in spite of developing it through ages, pointing out that leathers manufacturing requires a slog and long time because it is passing through several stages.
Al-Saidawi clarified that he maintains this career which has inherited from his ancestors by devising leather accessories and other materials, adding that tourists prefer to buy such products because they are endowed with a high quality and mastering in manufacturing.
He asserted that the Damascene oriental leathers are characterized by their decorations and drawings inspired from environment and their historical and civilized features.
The craftsman concluded that Syrian tinned leathers are known globally and the Syrian oriental leathers compete other kinds of leathers.
