Death toll from stampede incident at the Great Umayyad Mosque rises to 4

Damascus, SANA- the death toll from the stampede incident on Friday at the Great Umayyad Mosque rose to 4 and 16 injuries, Director of Damascus Health Department, Dr. Muhammad Akram Maatouq said in a statement.

Authorities were trying to determine the causes of the incident and will hold those responsible accountable, Damascus Governor Maher Marwan told SANA.

The stampede, according to the statement, was caused by overcrowding at a civilian-organized event inside the mosque.
