A great treasure of aromatic plants (green gold) existed in Syria- Report

Damascus, SANA-Syria possesses a high comparative advantage through its production of many species and plant origins, especially medicinal and aromatic plants, or what is known as “green gold”.

The Syrian environment produces many types of aromatic and medicinal plants that are globally- famed, such as thyme, rosemary, sagebrush, Damascene rose, and many others.

Those species are considered important non-traditional crops with multiple advantages, as they are used in medicines, cosmetics, perfumes, and extracting oils manufacturing.

They contain many organic ingredients, in addition to other substances such as carbohydrates, proteins, and vegetable fats.

The plants are of great economic value likewise their nutritional and health importance, and considered cleanse environmental crops, as they do not need chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

The importance of those plants is also shown as they contribute to reducing the environmental pollution resulting from the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. They reduce health risks, especially for pesticide users, preserve the environment, improve soil fertility, and do not cause the loss of nutrients from agricultural soil.

Syria is considered as one of the plants’ exporting countries, and the majority of the exported quantities were in the form of dried plants, as the value of exports during the first half of this year amounted to about 3100 tons, with a value exceeding 7.7 million dollars, mostly to East Asian countries and India.
