Cuba demands lifting unilateral coercive measures imposed on Syria

New York, SANA-Cuba has retreated its demand to lift the unilateral coercive economic measures imposed on Syria, stressing that these measures impede development in the country.

In his intervention at the UN General Assembly, Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the UN, Yuri Gala López, denounced the policy of double standards adopted by the US, noting that while Washington says it is concerned about the humanitarian situation of the Syrian people, it is imposing unilateral measures against them.

López stressed the importance of lifting these measures, expressing rejection of any politicization of humanitarian assistance and its use as a tool for political blackmail.

The Cuban diplomat said that any decision adopted by the Security Council regarding the humanitarian situation in Syria must take into account the interests and concerns of Syria.

He stated that such measures slow down Syria’s sustainable development and bring about enormous suffering for its people.

López demanded that the international community cooperate with the Syrian government in ensuring that humanitarian aid reaches all Syrians.

The Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the UN also called for respecting Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and stop foreign interference in its internal affairs.
