Tehran, SANA – Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab-African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian stressed that President Bashar al-Assad is pivot to any political solution in Syria from Iranian and Russian perspectives.
In an interview with the Iranian al-alam TV, Abdollahian said that any political agreement or accord should start with President al-Assad so the Syrian people will assure the future of their country and determine their destiny by themselves.
He added that the outcomes of the political process in Syria will be determined by the Syrians alone in a stable, calm and terror-free atmosphere, and no other country will interfere in this issue.
He attributed the softened US tone towards Syria to the fact that the Americans have been misled by some of their friends in the region and the false information they received on the collapse of the Syrian state within one week or one month which was totally contradictory with reality on the ground.
“Those who expected the downfall of the Syrian State have no real understanding of the Arab world and the Syrian state from inside,” Abdollahian said, noting that the so-called opposition lacks popular base and has no authority in Syria
On the Russian initiative to solve the crisis in Syria and the Iranian role in this context, he underlined the ongoing consultations with Russian officials about continuing support to Syria and the inevitability of political solution as the best way out of the crisis.
He said that one of the main obstacles facing Moscow meeting is that large segment of the opposition lacks popularity and influence in Syria, not to mention the division and fragmentation among its ranks.
