Vienna, SANA- With the participation of a delegation of the Syrian Arab Republic, First Global Parliamentary Summit on Counter-Terrorism was opened on Thursday in the Austrian capital Vienna.
The summit is held in partnership between the Inter-Parliamentary Union(IPU) and the United Nations and the host country Austria.
President of the National Council Wolfgang Sobotka affirmed in the opening speech the importance role of the parliaments in preventing terrorism and developing effective strategies to combat extremism , especially the current situations in Afghanistan and Africa.
Sobotka pointed out that terrorism and extremism pose a threat to the security of states, the values of democratic societies and the freedom of citizens. Adding that the national parliaments play a major role in combating terrorism through issuing laws, ratifying international conventions and implementing related measures.
The conference sessions focus on combating violent extremism and hate speech, developing effective strategies, discussing challenges and searching for effective solutions to those affected by terrorism.
The Syrian delegation participating in the conference is headed by Arab and Foreign Affairs Committee at People’s Assembly, Boutros Morjana., the deputy head of the committee Ammar al-Assad, the committee’s rapporteur, Sherine Youssef, and the administrator Iyad al-Hassan.
