Damascus , SANA – The National Union of Syrian Students organized on Wednesday an event on the occasion of the International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD), marked on December 3 of every year.
Scores of students gathered in the yard of Damascus University’s dormitory on Mazzeh highway and marched towards the al-Jalaa Sports Club, a few kilometers away, where two teams of students with disabilities studying at the University played a goalball match.
Some of the participants who spoke to SANA reporter said such events always reflect positively on people with disabilities as they realize that they have the society’s support and backing.
The interviewed students expressed their belief that disabled persons are basic segments of the society and can be full partners in building the homeland’s future as they are “capable of achieving what normal individuals can’t.”
They cited the Syrian athlete Khaled al-Mohammad who is World Championship gold medal holder for Special Sports as an example of inspiring people with disabilities.
Wassim Kanakeriyeh, a four year English Literature student, told SANA reporter that the event is very important in terms of being “an opportunity to familiarize other people with what capabilities we have in study and sports fields.”
The event was attended by Minister of Higher Education Mohammad Amer Mardini and Rector of Damascus University Mohammad Hassan al-Kurdi.
