Shipment of medical assistance from World Health Organization to Syria

Damascus, SANA_ Syria on Saturday received a shipment of medical assistance to fight the Covid-19 pandemic from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The shipment, which includes personal protection needs for health workers, medicines and medical supplies, arrived at Damascus International Airport where a delivery note was signed.

In a statement to reporters, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean Ahmed Al-Manzari, who is currently visiting Syria, indicated that the organization started working at various levels with all countries of the world since the outbreak of the pandemic to ensure the readiness of health systems in a way that serves the communities.

The WHO, according to al-Manzari was able to supply the Eastern Mediterranean countries with various necessary needs, starting with laboratory aids for disease diagnosis and training courses for health workers in addition to working on providing them with personal protection needs and drawing plans to implement what the science has reached to deal with this pandemic.

Assistant Minister of Health Dr. Ahmad Khleifawi pointed out to the importance of the visit of the WHO delegation as it is the first for the organization’s regional director to one of the member states of the Eastern Mediterranean Region after the announcement of the Corona pandemic.

He talked about the existing coordination between the Syrian Ministry of Health and the WHO to take necessary measures to confront this pandemic.

Khleifawi pointed out that the 8.8 tons of assistance, provided to support the health sector in Syria, includes medicines for the Coronavirus and individual means of protection for the medical staff.

For her part, WHO Representative to Syria, Dr Akjemal Magtymova pointed out to the great cooperation with Syria since joining the organization, which was embodied in supporting the primary health care sector through the national vaccination program, the sector of communicable and chronic diseases, health systems, etc.

She mentioned that the visit coincided with the United Nations World Day and the World Polio Day.
