Sweida production of summer vegetables is estimated to increase by nearly 8,000 tons for the current season

Sweida, SANA- The cultivation of summer vegetables in Sweida has witnessed through the recent years an improvement either in the cultivated areas or productivity with increasing the demand for securing local needs and achieving self-sufficiency for many families and getting a good financial income particularly in conditions of western economic blockade imposed against Syria.

Assistant Director of Sweida Agricultural Department, Eng. Alaa Shaheb said in a statement to SANA that the cultivated areas with summer vegetables in the agricultural projects have raised from 5,330 dunums in 2010 to reach in the previous season to 10,670 dunums while in the current season amounted to 11,320 dunums out of 10,440 dunums are planned for cultivation, with an implementation rate of about 108 percent.

Shaheb pointed out that the amount of produced vegetables also increased from 33,247 tons in 2010 to reach at 62,454 tons last year, while the initial estimations for the current season have reached 70,294 tons.

He noted that the reasons of expanding the cultivation of summer vegetables are due to economic return of production and increasing expertise in the fields of this cultivation and  providing irrigation water by increasing the number of wells.

Shaheb clarified that others areas are planted within the organizational schemas and home gardens that have witnessed a gradual increase in the recent years as a result of the offered grants which included all requirements of its cultivation.

The crops included tomatoes, cucumbers, Armenian cucumbers, peppers, Summer squash, eggplant and potatoes.
