Mahmoud: Certain Western and regional states must stop supporting terrorism

Dushanbe, SANA – Syria affirmed that terrorism is the main threat to international and regional security and stability, stressing the need to pressure the states that support terrorism in Syria and the regions to cease their funding, arming, and protecting of terrorists.

This came in a speech delivered by Syria’s Ambassador to Iran Adnan Mahmoud at the High-level Conference “International and Regional Cooperation on Countering Terrorism and Its Financing Through Illicit Drug Trafficking and Organized Crime” held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.

Mahmoud said that Syria and its allies managed to defeat terrorism in most Syrian areas, and that the Syrian state is determined to eliminate terrorism completely across its territory and end all illegal foreign presence on its soil.

He said that combating terrorism requires that certain Western and regional states correct their strategic mistakes by stopping their support for terrorism and abiding by Security Council resolutions on counter-terrorism.

Mahmoud also called for ending the economic sanctions on Syria which violate the UN Charter and international law and constitute economic terrorism, as such sanctions are used against states that reject interference in their internal affairs.

The conference was opened by President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, who stressed the need to avoid double standards in dealing with terrorism, calling on the international community to cut off all political, military, and financial support for terrorism.
