Jableh ruins…witness to civilization spanning thousands of years

Lattakia, SANA- Archaeological site of Jabal (mountain) Bashrah in Jableh city sheds light on the ancient history of this region. Visiting this place will bring you back to the past to discover many civilizations it has passed through successively, starting from the old stone age.

It is the first and one of the oldest archaeological sites that have been excavated in the mountains of Jableh.

It dates back to the old stone age and subsequent times and poses  another witness on inhabiting in the coast since prehistoric times.

Stone axes were discovered at this site dating back to Acheulean period, about one million years ago. Jabal Bashrah is contemporaneous with the site of Sett Markho on the basin of Nahr al-Kabir al-Shamali, Director of Jableh’s Archaeology and Museums Department Massoud Badawi said.

The most important of these finds, according to Badawi, are the tombs of Jbaibat, dating back to the Hellenistic and Roman times, the Roman theater dating back to the 2nd century AD and the Roman Bath to the southeastern part of the theater.

He pointed out that one of the most important monuments in the Islamic period is Sultan Ibrahim Mosque, the Sultan’s Bath and al-Mansouri Mosque .

Badawi pointed out that the Department is currently studying and renovating the Dome of of al-Omari building located in the southeast of the ancient port of Jableh, which dates back to the 12th century AD .

The old Saraya building in the city will be converted into a national museum that includes the various archaeological artifacts that were excavated in Jableh area.
