Moscow, SANA- Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that US steps in the east of Syria are illegitimate, expressing Moscow’s concerns over them.
Speaking in an interview with Rossiya 1 TV channel, Lavrov said that the US is trying to pretend that its presence and steps are temporary.
“What is happening on the eastern bank of the Euphrates River clearly violates the commitment to Syria’s territorial integrity, declared by all and confirmed in the UN Security Council’s resolution. In my view, this is already evident for all, “he said.
Lavrov said that the US which is deploying troops and advisers on the eastern bank of the Euphrates river is playing a very dangerous game related to the Kurds, ignoring that this is a sensitive and urgent issue to many countries not only in Syria but in Iraq, Iran and Turkey.
“Unacceptable things are happening on the eastern bank of the Euphrates River. The US is trying to establish quasi-state structures. They earmark hundreds of millions of dollars into rebuilding these areas, so that people could return to a normal peaceful life, but they refuse to restore infrastructure on the territories, which are controlled by the Syrian government,” he said.
Lavrov went on saying that over the years, the Western countries have not offered any reasonable alternatives to the ideas and initiatives set by the guarantor states (Ruusia, Iran and Turkey) within Astana talks in terms of combating terrorism, creating conditions for the return of the displaced Syrians, humanitarian assistance, and the political process in the country.
In the same context, Lavrov said that the Russian President Vladimir Putin and his counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed during a meeting in Buenos Aires on the sidelines of G20 summit to put further steps aimed at preventing violation of the agreement on Idleb which was signed in Sochi city in light of non-commitment by the terrorists to the agreement.
