Iranian Culture Minister: OANA able to form basis for cooperation among peoples and governments

Tehran, SANA- Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance in Iran Abbas Salhi asserted that the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) as a major organization that embraces a large number of members has become able to play a constructive and effective role in the cultural and media diplomacy.

In a speech at the opening of OANA Executive Board Meeting in Tehran on Monday, Salhi said that culture in our contemporary society has become an effective diplomatic tool that has cultural, political and social effects.

He added that OANA as an organization which adopts noble and independent goals constitutes a basis for enhancing cooperation and solidarity among and peoples and governments.

He indicated that OANA represents an attempt to find a balance and to put an end to the single methods in the field of media and news and an attempt to defy the single and biased media approaches.

For his part Director-General of Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) Seyyed Zia Hashemi said in a speech during the meeting “In light of the comprehensive cooperation and the investment of the capacities of organizations such as OANA, we have become able to bridge the gap between the north and the south and to move towards a more just, democratic and humanitarian international community.”

He added that one of the important developments in the domain of the activities of the news agencies has been forming news coalitions in different areas across the world including Asia and the Pacific Ocean as OANA is considered one of these coalitions.

He affirmed that the mass media has played a very vital role in broadening democracy and facing the injustice and conveying the truths, in addition to providing the rights of citizens on the national and regional levels.

Iranian Deputy Minister of Culture meets SANA Director-General and other directors of media agencies

Iran’s Deputy Minister of Culture for Press and Information Mohammad Soltani Far on met Director-General of the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), Editor-in Chief Abdul-Rahim Ahmad and other directors of news agencies participating in the meetings of the Executive Committee of OANA.

Talks during the meeting touched on means to enhance the role of news agencies to keep up with modern technology and social media.

Soltani Far pointed out to the widespread influence of social media in the mass media space, which necessitates developing the performance of news agencies so that they can preserve their role as a main and reliable source of news.

For his part, SANA Direct-General stressed the need to enhance the role of national news agencies so that they can rise up to the challenges facing them, stressing that agencies must benefit from modern technology and social media to reach a broader audience and tackle issues that concern citizens and public opinion.

Earlier on Monday, the 43rd Executive Board Meeting of the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) started activities in Tehran with the participation of the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) represented by its Director-General, Editor-in-Chief Abdul-Rahim Ahmad.

The meeting is hosted by Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), and it is held with the participation of heads, assistants and senior directors of the news agencies which are members of OANA as directors of 19 news agencies will take part in the meeting.

The meeting aims at upgrading the level of media cooperation and media relations and exchanging viewpoints between news agencies and facilitating the exchange of information, in addition to enhancing the mechanisms of cooperation with the aim of consolidating unity between states.

The meeting also aims at mobilizing most of the capacities of the news agencies to enhance their professional performance to face the challenges, in addition to the optimal benefit from the social networking websites to reach an honest media that serves the issues of all humanity along with focusing on ethical principles and professional standards.
