Lavrov: Only Syrians decide their country’s future

Singapore, SANA-Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reiterated that the Syrians are the only ones who are entitled to determine their country’s future as confirmed by the UNSC Resolution no. 2254.

Lavrov‘s remarks came during a press conference at the conclusion of a Russia-ASEAN meeting in Singapore on Thursday.

Lavrov said that Russia considers the attempts of some external players to determine Syria’s fate on behalf of the Syrian as “unconstructive and useless.”

He pointed out that the UNSC resolution no.2254 provides for the unity and the independence of Syria and that the Syrians are the ones who decide the future of their country by themselves.

Lavrov stressed on the need for eliminating terrorists in Idleb, in parallel with the return of the displaced Syrians to their country, indicating that the US is “approaching with reservation” the return of the displaced.

In the same context, Lavrov and his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif discussed the situation in Syria.
